Geir Helgemo is a Norwegian-born titan in the world of bridge, making him an unlikely candidate to be disciplined for failing a mandatory drug test.
But last month, the World Bridge Federation — yes, bridge as in the card game — suspended Mr. Helgemo after a random test found the presence of synthetic testosterone and Clomifene, a medication typically used to treat infertility in women that can also increase testosterone levels in men.
Mr. Helgemo, a professional player who represents Monaco at tournaments, will not be allowed to participate in a bridge competition until November, the federation said.
Unlike a typical doping scandal, the substances found in Mr. Helgemo’s urine were not meant to enhance his performance, David Harris, the federation’s general counsel, said on Saturday.
“He didn’t have a terribly good understanding as to how the drugs got into his system,” Mr. Harris said.
Mr. Harris said that Mr. Helgemo asked for the lab to recheck his results after they came back from a test taken at a championship competition in Orlando, Fla., in September. They came back unchanged.
Eventually, he settled on the most likely explanation: Mr. Harris said Mr. Helgemo told the federation that he had been trying to control his weight and had been taking supplements — with unknown ingredients — given to him by a friend who was a body builder.
Mr. Helgemo, who is serving a prison sentence in Norway for tax fraud unrelated to his suspension, could not be reached on Saturday.
Although doping scandals are almost always associated with physically arduous sports, such as cycling and track, the same rules set by the World Anti-Doping Agency apply to more sedentary games that are recognized by the International Olympic Committee, such as bridge and chess.
Players in competitions recognized by the committee are subject to the World Anti-Doping Code, which spells out the rules for drug testing and investigations. There is also a “Prohibited List,” an expansive catalog of banned substances that includes anabolic steroids, hormone modulators and diuretics.
The federation was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the 1990s, making it subject to the antidoping rules. The recognition brought “the great sport of bridge at the same level with those sports already admitted in the Olympic Games,” the federation said on is website.
“People subject to the code have to be careful about what substances they put into their body,” Mr. Harris said. “If someone is giving him supplements, he ought to be checking what’s in that.”
This standard is controversial in the bridge community, however, where some players wonder why they have to be tested for drugs that would not even help them win, said Alvin Levy, the first vice president of the federation. On an internet forum for bridge players, hundreds of comments were posted, with some saying that drug testing for bridge players made no sense.
Bridge competitions are long events that require focus and stamina, Mr. Levy said. Some competitions can last weeks, and a single event can last several days.
“Many of the top players treat it like they are an athlete,” he said. “They’re very careful what they eat between games. They want to make sure they’re alert. They’ll keep away from alcohol.”
Mr. Levy said that, generally speaking, using drugs to enhance performance is not a pervasive problem in bridge and that he could not recall a previous suspension related to a failed drug test.
In the past, Mr. Harris said, a bridge player tested positive for a banned substance but it was later determined that the player was prescribed the medication by a doctor for his health. Based on the antidoping code, athletes can get exemptions for “therapeutic use” of a drug. That exemption can be granted for athletes to treat neuropathic pain and A.D.H.D. or transgender athletes who wish to take hormones.
People often assume that the antidoping rules are exclusively meant to prevent athletes from taking drugs to make them stronger, faster or more focused, but accepting the code is about trying to keep the sport “clean” and free of drugs, Mr. Harris said.
“We wouldn’t want the top bridge players thinking, ‘Oh, it’s O.K. to have a bit of cocaine,’” he said. “It’s not just about enhancing performing; it’s a wider ethical consideration.”
